New Child Seat Belt Laws 2010

Wednesday, June 16th, 2010

Take note to avoid unnecessary fines!

New Seatbelt Laws will come into effect from From March 1st 2010 for children up to 7 years of age. Below are a summary of the changes as seen on the RTA website under Child Restraints. Click Child Restraints to view the entire information.

Summary of changes

From 1 March 2010:

  • Children younger than six months must be secured in a rearward facing restraint.
  • Children aged six months to under four years must be secured in either a rear or forward facing restraint.
  • Children aged four years to under seven years must be secured in forward facing child restraint or booster seat.
  • Children younger than four years cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows.
  • Children aged four years to under seven years cannot travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows, unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than seven years in a child restraint or booster seat.

A transitional period will apply until 30 June 2010 to allow parents and carers to fully understand and comply with the new laws.

The transitional period does not provide an exemption for the new requirements regarding seating young children in the front seat.

Drivers will need to ensure that children younger than four years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows.  Drivers will also need to ensure that children aged four years to under seven years of age do not travel in the front seat of a vehicle with two or more rows unless all other back seats are occupied by children younger than seven years.

In the interests of improved child road safety it is recommended parents and carers of young children make every effort to comply with the new requirements as soon as possible.

How do babies learn?

A babies brain will grow the fastest in their first few years of life than any other time. From newborn to age 6, 75% of brain growth is completed. We want to make their learning experience fun and a way to do that is through different learning modalities such as CD’s, DVD’s, books, musical books & discovery cards. The goal is to make their learning interactive way, this will allow a longer concentration span and information retention.

Baby Einstein was founded by Julie Clark, who wanted to create products that offered interactive experiences for her and her daughter to discover the world together. The Baby Einstein Company believes, along with the child development experts, that parent-child interaction is one of the most critical elements to the de-velopment of a healthy and happy baby during the first three years of life. Baby Einstein products are not designed to make babies smarter. Rather, Baby Einstein products are specifically designed to en-gage babies and provide parents with tools to help expose their little ones to the world around them in playful.

What is BPA and is it safe for my baby??

Bisphenol A (BPA) is a chemical building block that is used primarily to make polycarbonate plastic and epoxy resins. Polycarbonate plastic is a lightweight, high-performance plastic that possesses a unique balance of toughness, optical clarity, high heat resistance, and excellent electrical resistance.

  • In March 2009, six major baby product manufacturers agreed to eliminate BPA from their U.S. baby bottle products.
  • The low level BPA dose tests completed are close to the human exposure and show some evidence of neural and behavioural changes, development of precancerous lesions, changes in urinary tract and prostate development, and the early onset of puberty in girls that has been mentioned a lot in the media recently.
  • The NTP report concludes that evidence is still limited, but the possibility that BPA could negatively affect humans cannot be entirely ruled out. You can read more on the toxicology report here
  • Today, we have an option to buy BPA free products which is fantastic for the health of our little ones.
